Did you hear that there’s going to be a Scarecrow Contest in Gowanda on the weekend of the 18/19th? There’ll also be a storytime, food crafts (marshmallow popcorn!), regular ol’ food and drink and pumpkin painting on Friday the 19th at the Gowanda Free Library! Storytime at 11:30, and crafts at 12pm!
The Gowanda Free Library would like to announce the completion of our Career and Job Resource Center, a project made possible by an Outreach Services grant from the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Library System.
Our prime initiative in our career center project was to develop a permanent library area dedicated to resources for job seekers, career exploration, college and trade school options, self-employment resources, career assessment, job and career tool resources (resume building, cover letters, interviews), and related exam preparation books. We have also implemented one-on-one staff assistance for those patrons who may require additional help in using the career computer workstation to apply for jobs, complete FAFSA applications, or do job searches. The current hours for this assistance are: Tuesdays: 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm and Fridays: 10:30 am until 1:30 pm, September through December.
Although the first stage of this project is complete, we are currently working on providing in-house career and job placement services including computer literacy classes, GED assistance, and job readiness training. We are also planning on hosting a job fair for local area businesses. Look for updates here, as we progress with this project.

For the past year and a half we’ve been working hard to get our library collection in the automated system. Now we’re pleased to announce we will be going live in mid-February!
What does this mean?
It means faster check-in and check-out.
It means faster, more efficient service. When you ask “What else do I have out and when is it due?” we will be able to check with a few clicks.
It means staff can spend less time on data entry and more time on YOU!
It means patrons will be able to access free online audiobooks and ebooks from the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Library System when they receive their new card # and PIN!
It means you will be able to check our catalog, and nearly the entire System’s catalog holdings and be able to request items at your own leisure to pick up at the System library of your choice.
There will be a bit of a learning curve, and we beg for your patience as we work out the kinks!
The Library Director has pledged to dye her hair any color you vote on (as long as it’s an actual color we can get!) if the kids read a combined total of 30,000 minutes!
Get those levels turned in!
